... to see the northern lights.
That's the begginig of a song by a finnish group. And wow! Since I was a child, I've always had the dream of seeing the Northern Lights, but since I live in Spain, it didn't seem very easy for me to do so. So, this year, living in Sweden, was my opportunity of trying to get to see them, but when you are here and you get some info, you understand that some special conditions have to be given in order to see them, like it has to be really cold and dark. I mean, it's not like you come to Sweden and see Northern Lights every night.
So, when we decided to go to Kiruna 5 days ago (in the end of the world, or at least, Sweden, as you can see here...) we were in the middle of great snow-storms and a cold wave all over the country, which didn't make too likely to see the Lights but even though, we wanted to do the trip.
I have to say now that I think this has been the best trip ever. Not only for the people (Ooole, my Raquelina), but also for everything I got the chance to do there, like seeing mountains of snow in the middle of the city, see how Kiruna was completely cover with ice and snow, drive a dogsledg by myself, spend the night in the middle of Lappland, far away from any sign of civilization, and see also how my hair, eyelashes, nose and tears were frozen at -30 degrees. We also walked thru a frozen lake, did some cross country skiing, saw the Icehotel (build only with ice). Anywhere you looked, you were amazed, it was incredible, seeing a world so different from mine.
But, of course, the best thing of the trip without any doubt, was the Northern lights. I just can't describe (not even in spanish) what I felt, but I can say that the combination of those Lights, the sky full of stars, the silence and the snow covering everything in white made me cry some tears (of emotion, of course). It's so special that in that exact moment I wish that all the people had the chance to be there, watching what I was watching. It was overwhelming. And that's why I loved the trip, even though I was paralized for like 1 hour, couldn't walk or move my feet, with the left leg frozen completely. Anyways, the freezing cold, you can forget that, but the feelings I got during that trip, I know I will have them for a lifetime.
Please, please, if you ever get the chance to travel there and see the Northern Lights, don't hesitate, not even for a moment.
